Make Your Own Advertisement

You may make a spoof ad OR an ad for fake product or service. (Do both for extra credit)

Spoof Ad

Use your spoof ad to show the hypocrisy, hidden truth, or alternate side of a political or social issue, product, company or social trend. Examples of spoof ads in a powerpoint.

Ad for a fake Product

Create a fake product. It may be a personal care product, a food, a type of car, clothing, jewelry, a service, or anything you can imagine being advertised.  Decide who the target audience would be and in what kind of magazine your ad would be found. Plan how to engage the audience using the five steps of the advertising pitch. Use our study of advertising techniques to make the ad realistic.

Requirements

  • Finished ads should be 8.5x11" magazine style advertisement. You may create them in a computer program, by altering one or more real magazine ads or photos, using collage techniques, using crayons, markers, paint, or a mixture of any of the above. The finished product should be neatly presented, not necessarily artistic, but neither should it be submitted on wrinkled looseleaf paper.
  • The ad must include both pictures and text. Pictures: should set the tone, show thoughtful arrangement to convey appropriate feelings, story, and message. Text: researched facts can add weight to a spoof ad; specific details can show advertising techniques in detail in an ad for a fake product.
  • The ad must show an understanding of the advertising strategies we have discussed in class. Both the words and graphics should represent what you have learned. Please see your notes, ask me questions and see the web links to review advertising techniques. The paragraph you submit will help make your case.
  • One particular ad strategy that should be obvious in your work is how ads tend to highlight the good and omit the bad. See this link for examples with common categories of products. An ad for a fake product might use this for realistic or comic effect. A spoof will often do the opposite for to raise consciousness or for comic effect.
  • Another strategy I will be looking for is the lifestyle, beliefs, or feelings that advertisers often use to get people to feel favorably about their products. Look at the audience centered part of the pitch (click on the various audience needs in the chart for examples)
  • If you have chosen the spoof ad, the ad needs to address an issue or problem
  • If you have chose to create an ad for a fake product, you need to use all five parts of advertising pitch.
  • Include a typed analytical paragraph explaining what you are trying to get across in your ad, who it is intended to sway and how.
  • You will be graded on creativity, effort, neatness, and the extent to which you show what you have learned about advertising.
